Our Teacher Feature articles are designed to bring you closer to the instructors at Yoga City. In this third installment, we’re introducing you to the woman behind it all – Mary Vivilecchia, the Founder of Yoga City.
Mary opened Yoga City in 2013, but her yoga journey began long before that. She was first introduced to yoga by a friend in her late twenties. She has now been practicing for 15 years and teaching for 12!
Mary teaches both Hatha and Vinyasa, with a focus on strengthening the core and improving balance. Personally, her favourite yoga poses are the Warrior poses (Warrior 1, 2, 3, Humble Warrior etc.). “They make me feel empowered, beautiful and strong,” explains Mary.
In addition to teaching yoga, Mary also runs Yoga City’s Teacher Training program (YTT), designed to help passionate yogis deepen their practice and share the joy of yoga with others. Through the YTT program, Mary has been able to share some of her favorite yoga books with her students, including the Bhagavad Gita and the Yamas & Niyamas. Both books provide a foundational understanding of the philosophy behind yoga, and what it truly means to live a yogic life.
In her spare time, Mary likes to go hiking, dancing, mountain biking, travelling, take epic road trips, and hanging out with Jorge, the love of her life! Her favorite time of year is Spring and Fall. “I love new beginnings, and both seasons remind me of that. I also enjoy the cooler weather for hiking,” explains Mary.
Her favorite place to travel is Reykjavik, Iceland. “It’s such a beautiful place with lots of outdoor activities. The locals are very nice and the food was amazing. I had a blast and can’t wait to go back again!”
One little fact you may not know about Mary is that she is a huge Clint Eastwood fan. She’s seen all of his movies, so why not quiz her the next time you take one of her classes?
Students can expect to leave Mary’s yoga classes feeling stronger and more connected to themselves. Her advice to new students is to “be patient with yoga. Listen to your body, and let go of your ego.”
Mary teaches the following classes:
Sundays: Hot Vinyasa (9am-10am)
Mondays: Hot Vinyasa (4:30pm-5:30pm)
Mondays: Yin/Yang Flow (6pm-7pm)
